It is predominantly an agricultural and mining country and yet a forward-reaching nation with good industrial, commercial and scientific development. Petroleum and chemical products are the principal exports, followed by coffee, coal and emeralds. It also exports flowers, bananas, tobacco, sugar and cotton in large quantities. In recent years the export of manufactured goods has assumed an importance, particularly textiles and clothing. The capital city, Bogotá, and other principal cities such as Medellin, Cali and Baranquilla, have achieved an important economic and cultural development. There are the most important industrial and commercial centers of the country as well as the most famous educational and cultural centers. Capital of the department of Antioquia, situated in a valley, 1600 meters above sea level; with a spring-like climate and good roads communicating with the rest of the country. It has the best public services in Colombia; a modern health service, two airports, an in-city train service and two bus terminals. Medellin offers excellent and varied hotels, tourism facilities and an ample university system. Medellin is an industrial, commercial, financial and manufacturing city. It is the headquarters of the largest economic group in the country, host to a variety of fairs, exhibitions, congresses and conventions. It is a modern, hospitable city, of warm-hearted, hard-working, forward-looking people, known affectionately as Paisas. The Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia, EIA, (Antioquia School of Engineering) is a higher education institution with the Legal Recognition No. 20120, issued by the Colombian Ministry of Education on November 12, 1979. We are located in Medellin, capital city of the province of Antioquia, and second largest city of Colombia. The Instituto Colombiano para el Fomento de la educación Superior (ICFES), a department of the Ministry of Education, regulates and controls the quality of higher education in Colombia. Only those institutions that meet ICFES standards are authorized to award undergraduate and graduate degrees. The ICFES has authorized EIA to award bachelors degrees in the following engineering areas : Civil, Industrial, Management, Environmental, Informatics and Biomedical. The program of Biomedical Engineering is offered jointly with the Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud, CES, (Institute of Health Science), another institution of higher education authorized by the Ministry of Education to offer graduate and undergraduate programs in Medicine and Dentistry. It is important to point out that each one of our undergraduate programs is of eleven academic semesters. The Institution, also offers graduate programs in Soil Recovery, Corporate Finance, Production and Service Management, Engineering Industries Management, and Urban Management and Urban Processes. EIA is currently working towards the creation of new graduate programs to give more academic and research support to the undergraduate programs. Admission to our Institution is selective and competitive. Applications are first reviewed to confirm successful completion of all High School subject requirements. Then de ICFES examination scores are reviewed. Only those applicants with a very high performance in high school and good ICFES scores* are admitted to our programs (top 10%). Therefore an average of only 300 new students per year are admitted. Since its foundation in 1978, EIA has granted bachelors degrees to some 1000 graduates. Currently, it has a total enrollment of 1100 students. EIA belongs to the Colombian Network for International Cooperation (RCI), which encompasses universities and companies of Medellin and other cities in Colombia. It is also member of COLUMBUS (Association of European and Latin-American Universities), EAIE (European Association for International Education) and ICDE (International Council for Open and Distance Education). *Foot note: The ICFES examination is the national pre-requisite for university entrance, in this exam all academic subject areas are examined. INTER-INSTITUCIONAL AGREEMENTS In order to ensure an international dimension EIA has formalized agreements for cultural and academic cooperation with the following foreign universities : Universidad Adolfo Ibañez (Chile), Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (Mexico), Universidad Pinar del Rio (Cuba), University of the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago), Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain), Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (Spain), L´Ecole Nationale de Ingenieurs de Metz (France), and University Heinrich- Heine in Duesseldorf (Germany). By these agreements we can share experiences and knowledge, develop joint research projects and exchange students, faculty members and administrative staff. In addition to those international agreements, the University has also signed agreements with well-known local universities, as Universidad de Antioquia , (Antioquia University), Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, UPB, (Bolivar Pontificial University), Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud, CES, (Institute of Health Science) and Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería, ECI, ( Colombian School of Engineering in Bogotá), to share resources, develop joint projects and other extension activities. One of the main purposes of these local agreements is to share library resources.
